Lourens Oberholzer — The need and benefits of a personal financial coach

With Lourens Oberholzer — Retire Rich And Happy Wills And Estates

In short

Lourens Oberholzer sets out what a personal financial coach does that a broker does not — cash flow, budgeting, habits and accountability rather than product sales — and walks through Retire Rich and Happy's four coaching levels: student, undergraduate, graduate and investor, each with its own goal, ending at the "breakout point" where passive income equals active income. The one takeaway: Retirement, in Lourens's definition, is the point where you work because you want to rather than because you have to.

How is a personal financial coach different from a financial adviser or broker?

An adviser typically handles risk and investment planning, and perhaps some tax, while a coach handles cash flow management, budgeting, spending efficiency and strategy. Lourens argues advisers are paid for doing things for you, which builds passive investors, whereas a coach's purpose is to empower people to do it themselves.

Why does the industry push products rather than advice?

Because the industry has not moved fully to a fee-based structure, so income comes from selling products. Lourens says there are many good people with the best intentions, but the incentive means they look for an opportunity to sell. David gives the example of his sister's fund manager reappearing after five years once retrenchment money was on the table.

What does a financial coach actually do with you?

Four things: teach the basics of financial management and cash flow, build healthy money habits and a different mindset towards money, put effective strategies in place and clarify goals, and keep you accountable. Retire Rich and Happy call their coaches wealth strategists, and coaching is how the five steps get implemented practically.

Is taking a personal loan to consolidate debt a good idea?

It can work but usually does not, because people consolidate without fixing the cause. Payments spread over a longer term, then within six months the credit card debt returns on top of the loan. Lourens says close the accounts and cards, and take control of cash flow with a proper budget first.

What happens at student level and what is "moving your zero back to zero"?

Student level focuses on financial intelligence and clearing unsecured debt. Work covers minimising risk, budgeting, strategic expense planning, separating variable from fixed costs into two accounts, creating positive cash flow, then a personal debt settlement plan. It typically takes one to two years and produces financial stability.

Why does Lourens say most budgeting is backwards-looking?

Because 80% of budgeting is reviewing what you actually spent, which creates the awareness needed to decide differently. Research they did found the average middle to upper-middle-class South African family overspends by around 10% a month — on a R40,000 budget, R4,000 that cannot be accounted for.

What is the minimum and maximum reserve level at undergraduate level?

Minimum reserve is three months' expenses — not income — combining variable and fixed costs, plus planned capital expenditure for the next twelve months. Maximum reserve sits about R5,000 to R10,000 above that. All surplus flows into a reserve savings account, and the level's focus shifts to entrepreneurial intelligence and financial security.

What is the breakout point?

The point where passive income from assets equals active income from a job or primary business, so the salary is no longer needed. Nobody in the programme has reached it yet, though Lourens says several have reached investor level and he hopes to be the first to break out.

What does investor level involve?

Emotional intelligence, giving back and teaching others. Capital in the free bucks account moves into income-generating assets, the income returns to the free bucks account, and the cycle repeats. The aim is financial abundance through generational wealth — assets that outlive you rather than savings that run out before you do.

In their words

Taken from the recording, word for word.

Our definition of retirement is a little bit different. It's not when you stop working, is when you get to the point where you can work because you want to, not because you have to anymore.

— David Watts

Instead of being reactive the whole time, already have a lot of these things planned. Now you can't plan for everything, things will happen.

— Lourens Oberholzer

An extraordinary life you get by design, not by chance. So if you want to create wealth and you want to get to retirement, you have to plan it.

— Lourens Oberholzer

We save our whole life, we retire, we invest the money, we live off the interest. That's what they taught us, and then usually the money ends before we end.

Key takeaways

  1. Retirement, in Lourens's definition, is the point where you work because you want to rather than because you have to.
  2. Financial coaching addresses cash flow, habits and accountability, areas a product-focused adviser typically does not cover.
  3. Debt consolidation fails when the underlying cash flow problem and the credit cards are left in place.
  4. Variable costs, not fixed costs, are where unaccounted spending disappears, so segregating them into a separate account makes the leak visible.
  5. The model runs student to undergraduate to graduate to investor, targeting graduate level within two years of a ten-year plan.
  6. Businesses tend to be started at the wrong time and from the wrong question — "what can I do" instead of what you are interested in.

Frequently asked questions

Can the coaching help someone with no income?

Not really. Lourens says they meet people where they are and can help anyone employed or earning an income, but someone completely unemployed with no job and no prospects is difficult, because they cannot provide a job.

What does Lourens think of unit trusts?

Useful for flexibility — no fixed term and money accessible at any point — but there is no creditor protection and no beneficiary nomination, so they form part of your estate for estate costs. Their system uses unit trusts and exchange traded funds often.

What is the free bucks account?

A separate, flexible investment account introduced at graduate level, usually a unit trust or ETF, giving some market exposure and growth at lower risk while keeping the cash accessible. It builds up to the minimum needed for a first income-generating investment.

What was being given away on the show?

Five sets of personal financial coaching with the setup fee waived — a three-hour session worth about R3,000 — plus two VIP tickets each to the forum on 27 July, bringing the total to around R4,000.

Where does Lourens want to end up personally?

Moving into public speaking and running workshops with groups rather than working at the coalface. He also says they have too little capacity for demand and are looking for people to train as wealth strategists.
